Just as humans benefit from having some form of health insurance, pet owners should also seriously consider obtaining medical insurance for their dogs.
Dog medical insurance is similar to human medical insurance, as customers are able to choose from many different types of policies, generally pay a monthly premium, and will receive reimbursement for a wide range of medical expenses depending on the type of coverage they have selected. However, dog medical insurance is considerably cheaper than human health insurance and given the high costs of veterinary care (often in the thousands of dollars for even fairly simple operations) it is a good choice for many pet owners.
There are many different types of health insurance policies available to pet owners. While these polices will differ from provider to provider, there are four main types of policies that dog owners will need to choose from.
The first type of insurance policy that dog owners may want to consider is an accident only policy. Accident only policies cover a portion of a customer’s veterinary bills, in case of an accident. Therefore, if a customer’s dog is hit by a car and needs to be hospitalized and/or undergo surgery, the customer will be reimbursed for a percentage of these costs. This type of dog medical insurance is usually the most inexpensive, which makes it an attractive option to many consumers. However, bills that are incurred by an accident are the only costs that are covered. If a dog becomes ill or is diagnosed with a disease, the customer will be responsible for paying these costs themselves.
While accident insurance is beneficial, many dog owners need a dog medical insurance policy that offers more coverage. The next step up from an accident only policy, is a policy that covers illness, disease, and accidents. These policies will generally cover the cost of medical testing, a variety of diseases, hospitalizations, x-rays, surgery, and a number of other related costs. These policies are more expensive month to month, but will quickly pay for itself if a dog falls ill.
Consumers that provide for a multi-dog household may want even more coverage. Fortunately, many dog medical insurance companies provide policies that will cover preventative care, as well as accidents, disease, and illness. These policies will reimburse customers for vaccinations, routine veterinary visits, heartworm prevention, flea and tick control, and may also help pay for a dog to be spayed or neutered. These policies are great for those that are providing for more than one animal, as they will reimburse a portion of almost all veterinary bills.
The last type of dog medical insurance policy is one that offers comprehensive coverage. These policies will usually cover surgeries, accidents, hospitalizations, illness, disease, and preventative care, as well as a number of other expenses, like boarding expenses or expenses due to the dog running away. Some policies will even reimburse reward money, the cost of the dog if he or she does not return, and travel expenses if a customer has to cut a trip short due to a medical emergency concerning the dog. These comprehensive policies often cover almost any situation that may arise, concerning the health and well being of the customer’s dog. However, customers must be willing to pay more for this type of coverage, as they may be significantly more expensive than other policies.
When choosing a dog medical insurance policy, consumers need to decide how much they are willing to pay each month and exactly what they need covered by their policy. Policies that are more expensive monthly, may turn out to pay off in the long run, if a dog becomes sick or suffers from an accident. Fortunately, when taking the time to choose the right dog insurance policy, customers will be able to afford expensive medical care, when their dog needs it most.
